Most agencies are chasing prompts, AI tools, and the latest algorithms. I think they're asking the wrong question. The real challenge isn't how to optimize for AI. It's whether AI has enough trustworthy information to recommend your business in the first place.

That's why I believe AI didn't replace SEO. It validated why SEO has always mattered. Whether someone searches Claude, asks ChatGPT, uses Google AI Mode, or tries the next AI search engine, they all depend on the same thing. They need evidence that your business is real, trustworthy, and genuinely good at what it does.

This article isn't another guide filled with prompt hacks or AI buzzwords. It's my perspective as the founder of Argh Matey on where search is heading, why local businesses have a massive opportunity, and why documenting your expertise may become the most valuable marketing investment you make this decade.

The Biggest Myths About AI SEO

For years, SEO has been treated like the forgotten stepchild of digital marketing. I've spent my career sitting in website marketing meetings where SEO was often the first budget questioned. It wasn't because executives doubted organic search. It was because SEO is difficult to measure in the short term, while paid advertising delivers results almost immediately.

That mindset caused many businesses to underinvest in one of their most valuable long-term business assets. Ironically, artificial intelligence is proving those investments were never old fashioned. They were foundational.

AI Didn't Replace SEO, It Validated It.

One of the biggest misconceptions I hear is that AI has made SEO obsolete. I believe the opposite is happening. Whether someone uses Google Search, ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, or Perplexity, those systems still need reliable information before they can recommend a business.

AI doesn't invent expertise. It discovers, organizes, and summarizes the expertise you've already published. If your services, customer successes, and industry knowledge aren't documented online, AI has very little evidence to work with.

SEO Has Always Been a Long-Term Investment

I've always found it surprising how willing companies are to spend tens or even hundreds of thousands of dollars on advertising while treating SEO as an afterthought. Advertising absolutely has its place, but the moment you stop paying, the traffic usually stops too.

SEO works differently. Every helpful service page, case study, FAQ, and customer review becomes another piece of evidence explaining who you are, what you do, and why customers trust you. Those assets continue building visibility long after they're published, and today they help AI understand your business just as much as they help search engines.

AI Changed the Return on SEO

For years, businesses viewed SEO as the slow marketing channel. AI has changed that perception because the same content that earns rankings today also helps power the recommendations people receive from AI search.

The future isn't AI instead of SEO. It's AI built on great SEO. Businesses that clearly document their expertise today won't just earn better rankings. They'll be far more likely to become the businesses AI recommends tomorrow.

How Argh Matey Defines AI SEO

AI SEO sounds complicated, but the idea is surprisingly simple. It's the practice of making your business easy for both search engines and AI platforms to discover, understand, trust, and recommend. At Argh Matey, we don't optimize websites for Google's ten blue links alone. We build websites that communicate expertise clearly, whether someone finds your business through Google AI Mode, Grok, ChatGPT, Claude, or whatever comes next.

The Yellow Pages Have Been Replaced

If you owned a business in the 1990s, being listed in the Yellow Pages wasn't optional. It was how customers found local plumbers, electricians, attorneys, restaurants, and almost every other local service business. If you weren't listed, you were invisible.

A side by side graphic by Argh Matey contrasting a Yellow Pages phone directory from the past labeled Then, with a modern smartphone displaying a conversational AI search overview for a local plumbing contractor labeled Now.
The Yellow Pages helped people discover businesses in the 1990s. AI search is helping them discover businesses today.

Today, AI search is becoming the modern Yellow Pages. People still want recommendations, but instead of flipping through a phone book, they're asking AI who to hire. The technology has changed. The customer behavior hasn't.

AI Can Only Recommend What It Understands

Imagine someone asks, "Who's the best plumber in Kaukauna, WI?"

AI doesn't invent an answer. It evaluates the information available across the web, including websites, reviews, business profiles, and other trusted sources. Then it recommends the businesses it understands with the highest confidence.

If your expertise isn't documented online, AI has very little evidence to work with.

AI Still Needs Great SEO

There's a common misconception that AI replaced SEO. In reality, AI depends on many of the same signals that have always mattered. A well-structured website, helpful content, technical SEO, customer reviews, and topical authority all make it easier for search engines and AI systems to understand your business.

Great SEO has never been about manipulating algorithms. It's about communicating your expertise so clearly that both people and machines immediately understand what you do and why customers choose you.

What Great SEO Looks Like

Strong SEO combines technical excellence with genuinely helpful content.

  • Clear website structure

  • Helpful service pages

  • Fast page speed

  • Internal linking

  • Technical SEO

  • Original content

  • Customer reviews

  • Topical authority

Each page becomes another piece of evidence supporting your reputation.

What We Optimize For

At Argh Matey, we don't optimize websites simply to improve rankings. We optimize them to become trusted digital assets that search engines and AI platforms can confidently recommend.

That means building websites that perform well in traditional search while also strengthening the signals AI increasingly relies on.

  • Google Search

  • Google AI Mode and AI Overviews

  • ChatGPT and other AI assistants

  • Technical SEO

  • Structured website architecture

  • Helpful, original content

  • Brand authority

  • User experience

  • Conversion-focused design

We also look beyond your website. Customer reviews, consistent branding, other website mentions, and an active online presence all help reinforce your credibility. The goal isn't to optimize for one search engine. It's to build a business that's easy for both people and AI to understand, trust, and recommend.

What I've Learned While Testing AI Search

I've spent hundreds of hours experimenting with AI search, comparing answers across Google AI Mode, ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, Perplexity, and other platforms. The more I test, the more one conclusion keeps proving itself. AI doesn't invent your business story. It discovers the story you've already published.

That completely changed how I think about SEO. Success isn't about finding clever prompts or chasing the latest algorithm update. It's about giving AI enough trustworthy evidence to understand who you are, what you do, and why customers should choose you.

AI Can't Recommend What It Doesn't Know

Think about the conversations you have with customers every week. You explain your services, answer common questions, share success stories, and overcome objections. That's valuable knowledge, but it usually lives inside your head instead of on your website.

If you've never documented that expertise through service pages, FAQs, blog articles, or case studies, AI has very little to work with. One of the biggest opportunities for businesses today is simply publishing what they already know.

Reviews Are Digital Word of Mouth

Customer reviews have always influenced buying decisions. Today, they also help search engines and AI understand whether your business consistently delivers a great experience.

Reviews aren't just testimonials. They're independent evidence that reinforces your reputation. Businesses that earn genuine trust offline are far more likely to build authority online.

Local Expertise Is a Competitive Advantage

When someone asks AI for the best plumber in Kaukauna or the best web designer in Green Bay, it isn't looking for a business on the other side of the country. It's looking for companies that clearly serve that community.

That's why location pages, Google Business Profile, consistent business information, and local content matter. The easier you make it to understand where you work, the easier it becomes for AI to recommend you to nearby customers.

Marketing Is Becoming Documentation

One of the biggest changes we've made at Argh Matey isn't technical. It's philosophical. Instead of asking what sounds clever, we ask what customers are actually searching for.

Search data reveals the exact questions people ask before they become customers. Our job is to answer those questions honestly and organize the answers into content that's useful for both people and AI.

Authority Is Built One Signal at a Time

AI doesn't judge your business based on a single webpage. It evaluates your overall digital footprint, looking for consistent signals that reinforce your credibility. Some of the strongest signals include:

  • Customer reviews

  • Case studies

  • Professional associations

  • Industry certifications

  • Author expertise

  • Brand mentions

  • Consistent business information

None of these signals creates authority on its own. Together, they tell a much more complete story about your business.

Why Businesses Hire Argh Matey

Every business owner already knows their company better than anyone else. The challenge isn't expertise. The challenge is documenting that expertise in a way customers, search engines, and AI can immediately understand.

That's where we come in. We ask better questions, uncover the stories your customers need to hear, and turn that knowledge into websites, service pages, case studies, and content that continues working long after it's published. Because AI can't recommend the business it doesn't understand, and our job is to make sure yours is impossible to misunderstand.

How We Help Businesses Become Easier to Discover

Every agency has a process. Ours begins somewhere different. We don't start with keywords, website audits, or AI tools. We start by understanding the business.

Over the years, we've learned that AI can't accurately recommend a business that hasn't clearly explained itself. Before we think about rankings, we focus on understanding what makes your company genuinely valuable.

We Learn the Business Before the Marketing

If we started working together tomorrow, our first meeting wouldn't be about SEO. It would be about your business. We want to understand why customers choose you, what problems you solve, and what makes your company different from every competitor in your market.

Some of our favorite questions include:

  • Why do customers buy from you?

  • Why do prospects hesitate?

  • Which services drive the most revenue?

  • What questions do customers ask every day?

  • What do you wish more people understood about your business?

Those conversations often uncover your biggest competitive advantage. Our job is turning those insights into content that customers, search engines, and AI can all understand.

We Diagnose the Real Problem

One of the most common requests we hear is, "We just need better SEO."

Sometimes that's true. Other times the real issue is unclear messaging, weak differentiation, outdated content, or a website that never explains why customers should choose you. SEO can't solve every business problem, but it often reveals the ones holding you back.

SEO Can't Make a Bad Product Good

Great SEO doesn't hide weaknesses. It exposes them.

If customers consistently leave poor reviews, or your website fails to communicate why you're different, neither Google nor AI will magically fix those problems. They'll simply reflect the signals your business is already sending.

That's why our job isn't to manufacture credibility. It's to uncover what makes your business genuinely valuable, strengthen the areas that need attention, and communicate that value clearly to both people and AI.

We Let Data Guide the Strategy

Once we understand your business, we validate our assumptions with data. Google Analytics, Google Search Console, Google Business Profile, technical audits, and competitive research help us understand what's already working and where the biggest opportunities exist.

Instead of guessing what customers want, we study how they're already searching. Good strategy begins with evidence, not opinions.

We Build Content Around Real Questions

The best content rarely starts with keywords. It starts with customer questions.

We look for the problems people are trying to solve, the services competitors haven't explained well, and the opportunities hiding inside search data. Some of our biggest wins come from identifying content gaps where customers are actively searching but very few businesses have created genuinely helpful answers.

We Build Websites That Explain Your Business Clearly

Research only creates value when it's put into action. That's where design, development, copywriting, and SEO come together.

Whether we're building in WordPress, Webflow, Shopify, or Wix, every page has the same purpose. Help visitors understand your business quickly, make it easy to take the next step, and give search engines and AI the context they need to recommend you confidently.

AI SEO Is Really Documentation

If there's one lesson we've learned, it's this.

Most businesses don't have an SEO problem. They have a documentation problem.

The founder understands why customers buy. The sales team knows every objection. The technicians know how the work gets done. Customer service hears the same questions every day. Yet very little of that knowledge ever makes it onto the website.

Our job isn't to invent your story. It's to uncover it, organize it, and publish it in a way that's useful for both people and AI. That's what AI SEO means at Argh Matey, and it's why we believe documenting your expertise is one of the smartest marketing investments a business can make.

Where I Think AI Search Is Headed

People aren't searching the way they did five years ago, and I don't think they'll search the same way five years from now. We're already moving away from typing short keywords toward asking complete questions in natural language.

As that shift continues, the businesses with the biggest advantage won't necessarily be the ones spending the most on marketing. They'll be the ones that communicate their expertise clearly enough for both people and AI to understand.

Businesses Are Overthinking AI

One mistake I see over and over is businesses becoming fascinated with the technology while overlooking the fundamentals.

Before worrying about prompts, large language models, or the latest AI buzzwords, ask yourself a few simple questions.

  • Have we clearly explained every service we offer?

  • Have we documented what makes us different?

  • Are we answering the questions customers actually ask?

  • Have we earned trust through reviews, case studies, and helpful content?

Those questions matter far more than the latest AI feature because AI can't recommend expertise that hasn't been documented.

Authentic Businesses Will Have the Advantage

For years, marketers tried to optimize for algorithms. I believe the next generation of search rewards something much simpler: authenticity.

Businesses that consistently deliver great work, earn genuine reviews, publish helpful content, and invest in their communities create the kind of reputation AI is designed to recognize. It's becoming harder to fake authority, and that's a positive change for both businesses and customers.

Why Businesses Choose Argh Matey

Every agency has software. Every agency has reports. Every agency has a process.

That's not what makes us different.

We believe every business has expertise worth sharing. Our job is to uncover it, organize it, and communicate it clearly so the right customers can find it. We don't manufacture stories. We help tell the ones that already exist.

That philosophy shapes every website we design, every SEO strategy we build, and every conversation we have with our clients.

One Final Thought

If you've read this far, I hope you'll remember one idea above everything else.

AI doesn't invent your reputation. It discovers it.

The businesses that thrive over the next decade won't be the ones chasing every new AI trend. They'll be the ones that consistently build great products, earn their customers' trust, and document that expertise for the world to see.

That's what SEO has always been about.

AI didn't replace it. It validated it.
