The multi-generational San Francisco roots behind Argh Matey Digital Marketing™ — and the web design, SEO, and technical experience that grew from them.

Our San Francisco Story Started Long Before Argh Matey

When people ask where Argh Matey Digital Marketing™ comes from, the answer isn't simply Green Bay, Wisconsin. Our connection to San Francisco began long before a business address, or even Argh Matey itself.

Argh Matey Digital Marketing™ founder Matie Natov comes from generations of a family deeply connected to San Francisco and the SF Bay Area. Her great-great-grandmother and namesake, Matie Natov, became a leader in San Francisco's Jewish community. Her grandparents, Leonard Natov and Janet Simon, married at the Mark Hopkins Hotel on Nob Hill in 1948. Her father grew up in the Outer Richmond District and attended George Washington High School, while her mother grew up in the Excelsior District and attended Balboa High School.

Her parents met in San Francisco's Financial District in the 1980s, where Matie's mother was working at a sandwich shop and her father was working nearby as an electrical contractor. One lunch break became a conversation. A conversation became a relationship. And eventually, a family.

Although our founder grew up in nearby Vallejo, San Francisco has been woven into her family's story for generations. Years later, Matie would return to the city herself, living on Nob Hill, studying web design and development, and beginning the technical and creative career that would eventually lead to Argh Matey Digital Marketing™.

Today, we're headquartered in Green Bay, but San Francisco isn't simply a market we serve. It's part of our family's history and part of our company's DNA.

The Matie Before Matie

There was another Matie Natov long before there was an Argh Matey Digital Marketing™. Our founder was named after her great-great-grandmother, Matie Natov. Family history tells us that the elder Matie immigrated to America in the early 20th century, during a time when antisemitism and violent pogroms were driving many Jewish families to leave parts of Europe in search of safety and a new life. According to family stories, she embraced her new life made in America wholeheartedly, acclimating quickly and eventually leaving Yiddish behind. Our founder never had the opportunity to meet her namesake, but there has always been a curious connection between them. Matie's father has told her throughout her life that she reminds him of the elder Matie, not simply because they share a name, but because of their personalities.

Years later, we discovered something remarkable. Historical records show the elder Matie Natov serving as President of the Business and Professional Chapter of Hadassah, participating in San Francisco's Jewish community alongside women leaders from throughout the Bay Area. Generations later, another Matie Natov would become a business owner herself. Two women named Matie. Two generations of women building, leading, and finding their place in the San Francisco Bay Area. They never had the chance to meet, but somehow, their stories still found each other.

A San Francisco Love Story From 1948

The connection continued into the next generation. In 1948, our founder's grandparents, Leonard Natov and Janet Simon, married at San Francisco's historic Mark Hopkins Hotel on Nob Hill—a moment preserved in their original wedding announcement in The Jewish Community Bulletin. For decades, however, our founder didn't know this part of her family's history. And that's where the story gets a little strange.

Decades later, Matie returned to San Francisco as a young adult and lived near California and Stockton on Nob Hill—just blocks from the Mark Hopkins Hotel. She had no idea!

She was walking those streets while beginning an entirely new chapter of her own life, never realizing that her grandparents had begun one of theirs nearby decades earlier.

At the time, Matie wasn't thinking about family history.

She was discovering what would become her life's work.

Different generations.

The same little corner of San Francisco.

And eventually, part of the story that became Argh Matey Digital Marketing™.

1948 → Generations Later

Returning to San Francisco Changed Everything

After high school, Matie began studying Animal Science at Napa Valley College. She thought she knew exactly what she wanted to do. She was wrong. After her mother moved back to San Francisco, Matie followed and enrolled at City College of San Francisco. That decision changed the direction of her life.

Instead of continuing in animal science, she immersed herself in:

  • Graphic Design

  • Web Design

  • HTML & CSS

  • Website Development

  • Color Theory

  • Illustration

  • Drawing

  • Adobe Photoshop

  • Multimedia Communications

  • User Experience (UX)

This wasn't simply learning how to make something look attractive on a screen. It was an education in how visual hierarchy communicates information, how interfaces guide behavior, how technology and design work together, and how seemingly small decisions can fundamentally change someone's experience with a website. Everything that eventually became Argh Matey started inside classrooms at City College of San Francisco.

Argh Matey Digital Marketing™ founder Matie Natov's background combines web design, development, UX, SEO, and technical digital strategy.

Before SEO, There Was Good Design

One principle our founder learned early still guides our work:

A website has to work for people before it can work for a business.

Design isn't decoration.

Navigation isn't an afterthought.

Page structure isn't arbitrary.

Typography, hierarchy, accessibility, content, responsive behavior, performance, information architecture, and calls to action all influence what happens after someone arrives on a website.

Years later, Matie would apply that same systems thinking to search engine optimization and conversion strategy.

Because ranking a website is only part of the job.

If someone discovers your business through the internet but can't understand what you do, can't navigate your website, doesn't trust reviews, or can't figure out what to do next, the traffic hasn't accomplished much.

Good SEO earns visibility.

Good web design earns attention.

Good user experience earns action.

The strongest websites do all three.

San Francisco Taught Us to Experiment

Not every important design lesson happened in a classroom. While Matie was studying in San Francisco, her sister Amanda was attending Cinta Aveda Institute. In 2011, Amanda designed an elaborate gown made from discarded household materials for The Trashion Show at Ruby Skye in San Francisco—and asked Matie to model it.

Matie said yes.

And she ended up closing the show in her sister's design.

The event brought together 35 Northern California salons, drew approximately 700 attendees, and raised $25,000 for the Clean Water Fund. SFGATE documented the night and featured Matie and Amanda by name in its coverage of the event.

At the time, it was simply a wildly creative San Francisco experience shared between two sisters. Looking back, it captured something about the city that would influence Matie's approach to web design years later:

Experiment.

Create something unexpected.

Put it in front of people.

Pay attention to how they respond.

Learn.

Improve it.

That same spirit of experimentation eventually became part of how we approach websites, user experience, SEO, and conversion optimization at Argh Matey Digital Marketing™.

San Francisco Taught Us How to Earn Attention

San Francisco is alive.

People are moving.

Ideas are everywhere.

Technology changes constantly.

Every sidewalk, storefront, startup, advertisement, coffee shop, notification, and conversation competes for attention. Living and working in San Francisco taught our founder a principle that eventually became fundamental to Argh Matey's approach to digital marketing:

Attention is earned.

The same principle applies to search.

Every query presents choices.

Every search result has competitors.

Every title has to earn a click.

And after the click, every page has to earn the visitor's attention.

That's why we don't view SEO, web design, UX, content, technical performance, and conversion optimization as completely separate disciplines.

They're parts of the same customer journey:

Search → Discover → Click → Understand → Trust → Convert

Our job is to understand and improve that entire experience.

Modern Web Design Is Technical

As Matie's career developed, so did the web. Modern web design became much more than choosing colors and arranging elements on a page. It requires understanding what's happening underneath the interface:

  • Semantic HTML

  • CSS and responsive behavior

  • Content management systems

  • Information architecture

  • Accessibility

  • Website performance

  • Analytics

  • Search-engine crawling and indexing

  • Internal linking

  • Structured content

  • Technical SEO

  • Conversion paths

  • User behavior

  • Mobile experience

  • Search intent

  • AI-powered discovery

That combination of creative design and technical thinking became one of the foundations of Argh Matey Digital Marketing™.

We don't believe a beautiful website is enough.

And we don't believe SEO should exist independently of the website people actually experience.

We build for both people and discoverability.

From San Francisco Startups to Global Brands

San Francisco became the foundation of Matie's professional career.

Early on, she worked for a startup in nearby Mill Valley, helping teach programming and web development.

Startup life reinforced a principle that stayed with her:

Done is better than perfect.

Build.

Launch.

Measure.

Learn.

Iterate.

Improve.

That mindset still influences how we approach websites and SEO.

Digital marketing isn't something that becomes "finished."

Search behavior changes.

Competitors change.

Technology changes.

Customers change.

Websites should evolve with them.

Customer-First Thinking at Sephora

Later, Matie accepted what felt like a dream opportunity with Sephora's corporate headquarters in downtown San Francisco.

That experience reinforced customer-first thinking.

Every digital decision ultimately affected a real person.

Could they understand the interface?

Could they find what they needed?

Was the experience intuitive?

Was unnecessary friction getting in their way?

Those questions eventually became part of how we evaluate websites at Argh Matey.

We don't simply ask:

Does this website look better?

We ask:

Is it easier to understand?

Can users find what they're looking for?

Does the content satisfy the intent that brought them here?

Can search engines crawl and understand its structure?

Where are users encountering friction?

What does the data tell us to improve next?

That's a fundamentally different approach to web design.

Technical Excellence at Meta

Following the pandemic, Matie joined Meta during one of the largest corporate rebrands in technology history, helping support the transition from Facebook's corporate presence to Meta.

Matie Natov's employee badge from her time working at Meta in the San Francisco Bay Area.

Working alongside designers, developers, marketers, engineers, and other specialists reinforced another important principle:

Great websites never stop improving.

At scale, digital experiences require systems.

They require governance.

They require technical precision.

They require collaboration between design, development, content, analytics, marketing, and engineering.

And they require the humility to recognize that what we think users will do and what they actually do aren't always the same.

That's why measurement matters.

Measurement and Optimization at Snap

Matie later continued expanding those skills while supporting enterprise digital experiences at Snap.

Each chapter strengthened a different part of the philosophy behind Argh Matey:

Startups taught speed.

Sephora reinforced customer experience.

Meta reinforced technical excellence and scale.

Snap strengthened measurement, analytics, and continuous optimization.

And City College of San Francisco provided the design and development foundation beneath all of it.

Today, those disciplines come together in the work we do for Argh Matey clients.

Why Our Approach to SEO Is Different

Argh Matey Digital Marketing™ doesn't approach SEO as a game of putting keywords on pages.

Our founder came to SEO through web design, development, UX, enterprise digital experiences, analytics, and years of studying how people interact with websites.

That background shapes how we approach organic search.

We consider:

  • Search intent

  • Technical SEO

  • Site architecture

  • Internal linking

  • Crawlability and indexation

  • Content structure

  • On-page optimization

  • Website performance

  • Mobile usability

  • User experience

  • Conversion paths

  • Local SEO

  • Analytics and search data

  • Structured information

  • AI search visibility

Because sustainable organic growth isn't created by one optimization.

It's created by a system.

A technically sound website helps search engines access and understand content.

Thoughtful information architecture helps users and crawlers discover relationships between pages.

Useful content answers real questions.

Strong UX helps visitors navigate.

Clear conversion paths turn visibility into business opportunities.

Analytics and search data tell us what needs to improve next.

SEO isn't separate from the website. The website is the engine SEO runs through.

The San Francisco SEO Project That Means the Most

Despite experience supporting some of the world's largest technology companies, one of the projects that means the most to our founder isn't enterprise.

It's family.

Matie's sister owns A.N. Artistry, a bridal makeup business serving San Francisco and the Bay Area.

Together, we built and optimized the website using web design, SEO, content strategy, local search strategy, and user-experience principles.

The objective wasn't simply to make the website prettier.

We wanted the right people to find it.

That meant understanding what prospective clients were searching for, how Google interpreted the business, what information visitors needed before making contact, and how the website could turn organic visibility into qualified inquiries.

Today, couples searching for a wedding makeup artist in San Francisco regularly discover the business through Google Search.

The website generates qualified inquiries and helps connect the business with prospective clients actively searching for its services.

For us, that's what SEO is supposed to do.

Not rankings for the sake of rankings.

Visibility that creates opportunity.

Watching a San Francisco small business grow through thoughtful web design and SEO has been one of the most rewarding parts of our story.

Helping People Build Lives Through Better Websites

A website can look like a collection of pages, images, headings, links, and code.

But behind most small-business websites is a person.

Someone trying to grow.

Someone trying to support a family.

Someone trying to turn a skill into a career.

That's why we care about measurable outcomes.

A better search position can mean another customer.

A clearer landing page can mean another inquiry.

A faster website can mean fewer visitors leaving.

A better conversion path can create more revenue from traffic a business is already earning.

Technical decisions have human consequences.

That's something San Francisco taught our founder—and something we try never to forget.

Building for the Next Generation of Search

Search is changing again.

Traditional search engines remain critical, while AI-powered search experiences are changing how people discover businesses and information.

For us, that doesn't mean abandoning SEO.

It means becoming even more disciplined about the fundamentals:

Create clear information.

Build logical website structures.

Demonstrate genuine expertise.

Publish useful first-party content.

Make important entities and relationships understandable.

Maintain technically accessible websites.

Answer the questions customers actually ask.

Build a brand people recognize and trust.

We believe businesses will increasingly need to combine technical SEO, excellent websites, useful content, genuine expertise, and recognizable brand authority.

That's the direction we're building toward at Argh Matey Digital Marketing™.

Why Argh Matey Continues to Serve San Francisco

Argh Matey Digital Marketing™ is headquartered in Green Bay, Wisconsin today.

But our roots remain firmly planted in the Bay Area.

San Francisco isn't simply another city on our service-area list.

It's where generations of our founder's family built their lives.

It's where her great-great-grandmother became a community leader.

It's where her grandparents married.

It's where her parents grew up.

It's where Matie returned as a young adult.

It's where she studied web design and development.

It's where she began building a career in technology.

And it's where many of the ideas behind Argh Matey formed long before the company had a name.

Argh Matey is a digital marketing agency with multi-generational San Francisco roots.

Today, we bring that history together with modern expertise in:

  • San Francisco Web Design

  • Search Engine Optimization

  • Technical SEO

  • Local SEO

  • Webflow Development

  • Webflow SEO

  • Website Redesign

  • UX Strategy

  • Conversion Rate Optimization

  • Content Strategy

  • Analytics

  • AI Search Optimization

  • Enterprise Web Development

Whether we're redesigning a website, diagnosing a technical SEO problem, developing in Webflow, improving organic search visibility, or preparing a company's content for the changing world of AI search, the objective remains the same:

Build digital experiences people can find, understand, trust, and use.

From San Francisco to Green Bay—and Beyond

The funny thing about origins is that sometimes you don't understand them until you look backward.

Our founder once lived on Nob Hill just blocks from the hotel where her grandparents had married decades earlier.

She didn't know.

She studied web design in the same city where generations of her family had built lives.

She didn't yet know where that education would lead.

She built a career in San Francisco technology and learned lessons that would eventually become part of an agency that hadn't been created yet.

And she carried those lessons with her.

Today, they live inside Argh Matey Digital Marketing™.

Design for people.

Build with technical discipline.

Earn attention.

Measure what matters.

Use data to improve.

Never stop learning.

Thank You, San Francisco

San Francisco gave generations of our founder's family a home.

It gave her grandparents a place to begin their marriage.

It gave her parents their love story.

It gave our founder an education in web design and development.

It launched her career.

It introduced her to startups, enterprise technology, world-class design, analytics, experimentation, and technical excellence.

It taught her that attention is earned.

It taught her that good design removes friction.

It taught her that technology should ultimately work for people.

And those lessons became part of Argh Matey Digital Marketing™.

Today, every website we design, every technical SEO problem we solve, every search strategy we develop, and every client relationship we build carries a little piece of San Francisco with it.

So, San Francisco:

Thank you for raising our family.

Thank you for raising our founder.

And thank you for helping shape Argh Matey Digital Marketing™.

We'll always be proud to serve the city that helped shape our family, our craft, and our company.
